The Industrial history of India is closely linked to the life of the Legend “Sir Shriram”. Sir Shriram had begun as a humble worker and went on to set up one of India’s largest business houses - the DCM Group. This business empire spread wings in a variety of areas such as textiles, sugar, chemicals, vanaspati, pottery, fans, sewing machines, electric motors and a whole lot of others. He was a visionary par excellence. His contribution was not limited to industrial activities. He was actively involved in promoting education, research and cultural activities. Institutions like Shriram College of Commerce, Hindu College, Lady Shriram College, Indraprastha College for women, etc apart from several schools are testimony to his contribution to education. He had played a very important role in moulding the industrial map of present India.

Dr. Bansi Dhar was Chairman & Sr. Managing Director of erstwhile DCM Limited. Previously he held various senior management positions in that company. He had overseen the restructuring of DCM Limited. After restructuring, he assumed the position of Chairman & Managing Director of DCM Shriram Industries Limited in 1990. His leadership and vision had seen the Company growing from strength to strength. He was admired by employees at all levels for the democratic way of working and for his concern for everybody. Dr. Bansi Dhar radiated a rare charm and whoever had come in contact with him fallen for his openness and straight talk. He was also a tough task master. Dr. Bansi Dhar’s mere presence energized any group assembled for discussion and decision making.

Dr. Bansi Dhar’s interests spread beyond corporate activities. He was keenly interested and associated with educational and cultural organizations. He headed trade and business organizations such as FICCI, PHDCCI, ISMA etc. Dr. Bansi Dhar was Vice- Chairman of Shriram Institute for Industrial Research, an internationally known and recognized research institution. The Institute scaled farther heights under his leadership.

I am privileged to be associated with DCM Shriram Industries Ltd as the Chairman of its Board. During my association of thirteen years with the Company, I am happy to note that the management and employees at all levels adhere to the code of conduct and business ethics scrupulously. Fair play in dealings with stakeholders is a highlight of the Company. I am sure under the superintendence of a well broad-based Board of Directors and dynamic leadership of Sr. Managing Director & Managing Director and with support from the Whole Time Directors and Sr. Management Personnel, the Company will seal greater heights.

DCM Shriram Industries Ltd., a company with an annual turnover of Rs. 180 Crore and PBDT of Rs. 8 Crore in the year 1990-91 has grown into a diversified corporate entity with a turnover of about Rs. 2000 Crore and PBDT of over Rs. 100 Crore. This was achieved even though the company’s core business, sugar depended on vagaries of climate, domestic and international production demand and government policies. Probably, Sugar is the largest agro based industry in the country and the most regulated.

A well sought out policy of diversification, expansion and upgradation of technology and processes from time to time helped the company to wade through turbulent times.

The company operates integrated sugar, power and alcohol plants at Daurala. Meerut. The efficiencies of the plants are best in the industry. This is a result of continuous upgradation and balance performance of equipment based on in-house research and development. This is the factor for the chemical and rayons business also.

Good corporate governance is fundamental to our business ethics. We pursue the highest standards of transparency, accountability, professionalism, social responsiveness and ethical business practices as a self-discipline code of corporate governance.

We have made baby steps to branch out to defense production and certain projects are already in the conception stage. Developed a Light Bullet Proof Vehicle worthy of use by Defence and Para Military forces.

We plan to grow fast and have motivating, ambitious aspirations.
